United States Imposes New Financial Sanctions on Venezuelan Government

Published by Matt Fishman on

Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new financial sanctions on the Venezuelan government. The executive order “blocks all… financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of” the “Government of Venezuela” and members of “the Maduro regime.” It also authorizes “the Secretary of State, to impose sanctions on persons who provide support to Nicolas Maduro and his illegitimate regime.” The U.S. Secretary of State’s Office commented that the “regime of Nicolás Maduro has consistently violated and abused the human rights and dignity of the country’s citizens, plundered its natural resources,… driven a once-prosperous nation into economic ruin,… reportedly engaged in killings and physical abuse, detained political opponents, and severely interfered with the exercise of freedom of expression, all in a brutal effort to retain power.” President Trump says the new sanctions are “not against the Venezuelan people, but against Maduro and his ongoing human rights abuses.”
