Planned Parenthood to Leave Title X Government Funding Program
Planned Parenthood announced today it will leave the Title X government funding program. Title X, designed to “offer a broad range of acceptable and effective family planning methods and services” specifically giving “priority…”to low-income families,” recently saw statute revisions which have been called “controversial” and met with legal backlash from Planned Parenthood. In March, the Trump Administration changed the provisions of the program to mandate that funding recipients promote “acceptable and effective family planning methods and related preventive health services that… does not include abortion as a method of family planning.” Title X has always explicitly disallowed “funds [to] be used in programs where abortion [is administered],” but Planned Parenthood says the change is “an unethical and dangerous gag rule” and they will not “comply.” With the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recent decision upholding the provision’s lawfulness, Planned Parenthood says “the Trump administration” has “forced [them] out” of Title X funding. Planned Parenthood CEO Alexis McGill Johnson says “Planned Parenthood is still open…, and our doors will be open tomorrow.”
