Today, June 25, 2019, Iranian officials fired back at the United States sanctions announced by President Trump yesterday against the Iranian Ayatollah and other Iranian government leaders and organizations. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, took to Twitter today, tweeting that imposing sanctions on Iranian officials “is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy” (1). The Foreign Minister of Iran, Javad Zariff, tweeted that “it’s now clear that the [US] despise diplomacy, and thirst for war” (2). Iran President Hassan Rouhani expressed his concerns in a televised statement, saying “The White House actions mean it is mentally retarded” (3). President Trump did not take these comments lightly as he responded on Twitter, tweeting “Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality. Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration” (4).
