Yesterday March 14, 2019 a man opened fire at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosque in New Zealand (1). The gunman live streamed the attacks on social media, showing the first shooting at the Al Noor mosque, leaving 41 dead, and then the Linwood Mosque killing 7 more (1). In the live stream the gunman can be heard screaming, “subscribe to PewDiePie” a reference to a popular meme review YouTube channel (2), and a released “manifesto” of the shooter reveals similar meme references (3). In addition to meme references, the manifesto makes attribution to United States President Trump, and ideals of white supremacy (4), going as far to explicitly call the shootings “a terrorist attack” (5). Social media websites including Facebook and YouTube have been working diligently to remove all videos of the shooting, and postings of the manifesto are being scrubbed from the mainstream news outlets (6). The shooter is in police custody and is being charged with murder (7).
