10 People Shot Dead in Chicago this Weekend
This past weekend, May 31 thru June 1, 2019, 52 people were shot across the city of Chicago, leaving 10 dead (1). Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the police department has made “19 arrests on gun-related charges and 81 illegal weapons [have been] seized since Friday evening” (1). This comes one week after Memorial Day Weekend saw 43 people shot in the city, leaving seven dead (2). Prior to the murders these past two weekends, Chicago murders for the year had totaled 174 with 703 shooting incidents (3). Historically, the city of Chicago leads the nation in gun violence, although recently there had been a 21% decrease in shooting incidents from 2016 to 2017 (4). Chicago is home to the state with the third most deaths related to gun violence trailing only California and Texas, according to an annual report by the FBI in 2017 (5).
