“The United States and the Taliban have agreed to a proposal for a reduction in violence in Afghanistan,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper reports.

Negotiation of the 7-day peace proposal comes days after a recent terrorist attack in Kabul, and within a week of the death of two U.S. soldiers who were killed in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented, if negotiations with the Taliban go well, it would give the U.S. an “opportunity to reduce the footprint not only for America’s forces there, but for all of the forces” in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani showed support for the agreement, tweeting: “Our primary objective is to end the senseless bloodshed… The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will manage the next steps in a manner that positively supports the overall peace process”.
