Over One Million People File for Unemployment in Last Week

Published by Matt Fishman on

Over the course of the past week, 1,186,000 Americans have filed for unemployment.

This is a slight improvement from two week ago, when 1,434,000 Americans filed for unemployment.

Over 1 million people each week have declared unemployment since the beginning of COVID-19 related shutdowns in March. While the number of people claiming unemployment is down significantly from it’s weekly high of 6.6 million people in early April, it is still much greater than the 214,000 initial unemployment claims this time last year.

31,308,678 people continue to collect some sort of unemployment benefits as of July 18.
