Births in United States Lowest Since 1985, Birth Rate Lowest Ever

In 2019, births in the United States totaled “the lowest number of births since 1985”, a report published today by the National Center for Health Statistics revealed.

The total number of births was 3,745,540, down 1% from 2018, marking the fifth year in a row that the number of births has declined.

This brings the nation’s fertility (birth) rate to 58.2 births per 1,000, a “record low for the United States”.

Teenagers aged 15–19 led the way in the birth rate decline, as the rate declined by 5% in 2019. Birth rate among teenagers “has declined by 60% since 2007”.
