Robocall Prevention Bill Passes in Congress

Published by Matt Fishman on

A robocall prevention bill has just passed in Congress “to help protect [consumers] from receiving unwanted calls or text messages from a caller using an unauthenticated number.” The “Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act” will hold those liable for violation of the bill for a fine of up to $1,000,000. To assure its effectiveness, the “bill requires voice service providers to develop call authentication technologies” assuring proper blocking of calls.

The bill passed nearly unanimously in Congress, with a vote of 417-3 in the House of Representatives and 97-1 in the Senate, and will now proceed to the White House for the President’s confirming signature.
